Geese Under the Flume

A couple months ago I hiked down to photograph one of the several flumes that follow the Truckee River through the canyon between Truckee and Verdi.  During the winter after many very cold days the water that continually leaks out freezes into incredible icicles and ice sculptures.   For years I have driven by on my way up or down the hill and finally I decided to hike down and photograph them.  My main goal was to photograph the flume and the ice, but as I was photographing I saw these two Canadian Geese wonder buy.

Yuba River Oak

2014 was a dry year and it left the mighty Yuba River running very low and slow, but it made from beautiful reflections.  I choose to render this in black and white to emphasis the wonderful texture of the scene

Yuba Reflections

In October of 2014 the South Fork of the Yuba River was running slow and had many beautiful pools that were mirroring the rocky landscape around it.

Truckee River Flume Ice

I hiked down to photograph one of the several flumes that follow the Truckee River through the canyon between Truckee and Verdi during deep winter.  After many very cold days the water that continually leaks out of the flume freezes into incredible icicles and ice sculptures.   For years I have driven by on my way up or down the hill and finally I decided to hike down and photograph them.  I choose to use HDR techniques to get the full range of detail in these shots.  In recent years the flumes have been rebuilt and do not leak as much, making this site less spectacular.

Dogwood over the Merced

Of the many flowers the bloom on Yosemite in the spring, the dogwoods get a lot of attention. These white blossoms on the green trees have an elegant beauty.  These where hanging down over the Merced River in Yosemite Valley.
